October 23- Juvenile Defender Trial Practice Institute ( Champaign)

On October 23, 2009 the Illinois Juvenile Defender Resource Institute in collaboration with the Criminal Law Program of the University of Illinois College of Law is hosting a Juvenile Defender Trial Practice Institute. The Trial Practice Institute will take place at the University of Illinois College of Law from 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM. CLE credits will be offered for attendance. (There is no charge to attend the Trial Practice Institute)

Participants in the Trial Practice Institute will utilize a case file involving a delinquency petition against a 14-year-old boy. The day will open with a session on how attorneys can integrate 80 years of court precedent into the client’s story in order to argue that the client’s “immaturity” supports the suppression of evidence. Throughout the day attorneys will practice new mechanisms for looking behind the crime, developing and investigating the entire timeline of the client’s life to develop the narrative that will enable them to effectively and persuasively tell their client’s story to a judge. The day will conclude with a session on professional responsibility as it relates to the representation of youthful clients.

For more information about this training or to register please go to www.iljuveniledefenders.org. If you have any questions regarding this event please contact Marjorie Moss at 312.503.0774 or m-moss@iljuveniledefenders.org

The Trial Practice Institute was made possible due to the generous support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Models for Change Systems Reform in Juvenile Justice http://www.modelsforchange.net/ .
